The Longest English Word

Posted under Linguistics and Language

Thanks to Frank at Yahoo!Answers for coming up with the questions though. The longest word in Englsih.Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanocon - a lung disease caused by the inhalation of volcanic ash, causing inflammation in the lungs.

This is the word according to Oxford English dictionary. The word can be found in many new editions of the dictionary.

I wonder if they will come up with te idea of chopping it down in a few years since it’s hard to spell it aloud. Let alone the idea of doctors speaking it up.

A Phone of the Future - No Strings Attached

Posted under Tech

Prototype Nokia phone recharges without wires
Pardon the cliche, but it’s one of the holiest of Holy Grails of technology: Wireless power. And while early lab experiments have been able to “beam” electricity a few feet to power a light bulb, the day when our laptops and cell phones can charge without having to plug them in to a wall socket still seems decades in the future.

Nokia, however, has taken another baby step in that direction with the invention of a cell phone that recharges itself using a unique system: It harvests ambient radio waves from the air, and turns that energy into usable power. Enough, at least, to keep a cell phone from running out of juice.

While “traditional” (if there is such a thing) wireless power systems are specifically designed with a transmitter and receiver in mind, Nokia’s system isn’t finicky about where it gets its wireless waves. TV, radio, other mobile phone systems — all of this stuff just bounces around the air and most of it is wasted, absorbed into the environment or scattered into the ether. Nokia picks up all the bits and pieces of these waves and uses the collected electromagnetic energy to create electrical current, then uses that to recharge the phone’s battery. A huge range of frequencies can be utilized by the system (there’s no other way, really, as the energy in any given wave is infinitesimal). It’s the same idea that Tesla was exploring 100 years ago, just on a tiny scale.

Mind you, harvesting ambient electromagnetic energy is never going to offer enough electricity to power your whole house or office, but it just might be enough to keep a cell phone alive and kicking. Currently Nokia is able to harvest all of 5 milliwatts from the air; the goal is to increase that to 20 milliwatts in the short term and 50 milliwatts down the line. That wouldn’t be enough to keep the phone alive during an active call, but would be enough to slowly recharge the cell phone battery while it’s in standby mode, theoretically offering infinite power — provided you’re not stuck deep underground where radio waves can’t penetrate.

Nokia says it hopes to commercialize the technology in three to five year

Below here is the last chapter of the book Eclipse. I dont know what Jcob is doing running wildly like anything and wishing to disappear far, far so as not to be able to hear the voices. He is also willing to choose the wold form over te human one. Let you read…

“A letter?”

“A . . . wedding invitation.”

Every muscle in my body locked into place. A feather of heat seemed to brush down my back. I held onto the table to keep my hands steady.

Billy went on like he hadn’t noticed. “There’s a note inside that’s addressed to you. I didn’t read it.” He pulled a thick ivory envelope from where it was wedged between his leg and the side of his wheelchair. He laid it on the table between us.

“You probably don’t need to read it. Doesn’t really matter what it says.” Stupid reverse psychology. I yanked the envelope off the table.
It was some heavy, stiff paper. Expensive. Too fancy for Forks. The card inside was the same, too done-up and formal. Bella’d had nothing to do with this. There was no sign of her personal taste in the layers of see-through, petal-printed pages. I’d bet she didn’t like it at all. I didn’t read the words, not even to see the date. I didn’t care.

There was a piece of the thick ivory paper folded in half with my name handwritten in black ink on the back. I didn’t recognize the handwriting, but it was as fancy as the rest of it. For half a second, I wondered if the bloodsucker was into gloating. I flipped it open.

Jacob,
I’m breaking the rules by sending you this. She was afraid of hurting you, and she didn’t want to make you feel obligated in any way. But I know that, if things had gone the other way, I would have wanted the choice. I promise I will take care of her, Jacob. Thank you - for her - for everything.
Edward

“Jake, we only have the one table,” Billy said. He was staring at my left hand. My fingers were clamped down on the wood hard enough that it really was in danger. I loosened them one by one, concentrating on that action alone, and then clenched my hands together so I couldn’t break anything.

“Yeah, doesn’t matter anyway,” Billy muttered.

I got up from the table, shrugging out of my t-shirt as I stood. Hopefully Leah had gone home by now. “Not too late,” Billy mumbled as I punched the front door out of my way. I was running before I hit the trees, my clothes strewn out behind me like a trail of crumbs - as if I
wanted to find my way back. It was almost too easy now to phase. I didn’t have to think. My body already knew where I was going and, before I asked it to, it gave me what I wanted. I had four legs now, and I was flying. The trees blurred into a sea of black flowing around me. My muscles bunched and released in an effortless rhythm. I could run like this for days and I would not be tired. Maybe, this time, I wouldn’t stop. But I wasn’t alone.

So sorry, Embry whispered in my head.

I could see through his eyes. He was far away, to the north, but he had wheeled around and was racing to join me. I growled and pushed myself faster.

Wait for us, Quil complained. He was closer, just starting out from the village.

Leave me alone, I snarled.

I could feel their worry in my head, try hard as I might to drown it in the sound of the wind and the forest. This was what I hated most - seeing myself through their eyes, worse now that their eyes were full of pity. They saw the hate, but they kept running after me. A new voice sounded in my head.

Let him go. Sam’s thought was soft, but still an order.

Embry and Quil slowed to a walk. If only I could stop hearing, stop seeing what they saw. My head was so crowded, but the only way to be alone again was to be human, and I couldn’t stand the pain.

Phase back, Sam directed them. I’ll pick you up, Embry.

First one, then another awareness faded into silence. Only Sam was left.

Thank you,I managed to think.

Come home when you can.The words were faint, trailing off into blank emptiness as he left, too. And I
was alone.

So much better. Now I could hear the faint rustle of the matted leaves beneath my toenails, the whisper of an owl’s wings above me, the ocean - far, far in the west - moaning against the beach. Hear this, and nothing more. Feel nothing but speed, nothing but the pull of muscle, sinew, and bone, working together in harmony as the miles disappeared behind me. If the silence in my head lasted, I would never go back. I wouldn’t be the first one to choose this form over the other. Maybe, if I ran far enough away, I would never have to hear again. . . .I pushed my legs faster, letting Jacob Black disappear behind me

Hmm…I’m done reading the third sequel Eclipse. There weren’t many details or interesting things in it. I consider the third sequel rather boring. Apart from the Volturri part and Bella getting engaged in the end, every other thing is boring just to prolong the story. The fight with Victoria and the newborns created by her is not that fascinating. This could have been replaced by Victoria alone. The illusion love of Jacob and Bella is nothing but disgusting. On top of that, patience and acceptance portrayed by Edward neither humane nor unhumane - it’s out of the world, may be werewolves world.
Introduction to Volturri, Demetri, Jane and Aro and their palace really makes the vampire world come to life. I give 5 thumbs up to Stephenie for such imaginative skills.
The book has many gruesome details. I suggest reading a summary out and directly skipping to Breaking Dawn. I think it was the most boring one out of the three. I really don’t have much to write about it.

Many times while reading I thought, Bella must be killed because she is making a hell out of things and putting everybody on the verge of danger.

And yeah, Jacob gets hurt while fighting the newborn vampires.

Beside all this readers learnt more about the human life of Jasper - that he was a military man. They also learnt about the history of Quileute people and werewolves.
The plans of Alice for Bella’s wedding are great (if you think you have enough patience to move to the next sequel). The grad’ present given to Bella by Jacob - bracelet with a wooden carved wolf charm seems to be great. Later in the novel, Edward adds a diamond charm to it. The ring Edward plans to give Bella on engagement also sounds great. He describes both of the things as hand-me-down from his mother.

The book ends with an awful running by Jacob on reading a letter addressed to him in Bella and Edward’s wedding invitation. There’s no more I can come up with writing about it.

The One-millionth English Word

Posted under Linguistics and Language

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A U.S.-based language monitoring group crowned Web 2.0 as the one millionth word or phrase in the English language on Wednesday, although other linguists slammed it as nonsense and a stunt. The Global Language Monitor, which uses a math formula to track the frequency of words and phrases in print and electronic media, said Web 2.0 appeared over 25,000 times in searches and was widely accepted, making it the legitimate, one millionth word.

It said Web 2.0 started out as a technical term meaning the next generation of World Wide Web products and services but had crossed into far wider circulation in the last six months.

Other linguists, however, denounced the list as pure publicity and unscientific, saying it was impossible to count English words in use or to agree on how many times a word must be used before it is officially accepted.

There are no set rules for such a count as there is no certified arbiter of what constitutes a legitimate English word and classifying the language is complicated by the number of compound words, verbs and obsolete terms.

“I think it’s pure fraud … It’s not bad science. It’s nonsense,” Geoffrey Nunberg, a linguistics professor at the University of California at Berkeley, told reporters.

Paul JJ Payack, president of the Global Language Monitor, brushed off the criticism, saying his method was technically sound.

“If you want to count the stars in the sky, you have to define what a star is first and then count. Our criteria is quite plain and if you follow those criteria you can count words. Most academics say what we are doing is very valuable,” said Payack.

He has calculated that about 14.7 new English words or phrases are generated daily and said the five words leading up to the millionth highlighted how English was changing along with current social trends.

This list included “Jai Ho!” an Indian exclamation signifying victory or accomplishment, and “slumdog,” a derisive term for children living in the slums of India that became popular with the Oscar-winning movie “Slumdog Millionaire.”

The list also included “cloud computing,” meaning services delivered via the cloud or Internet, “carbon neutral,” a widely used term in the climate change debate, and “N00b,” a derogatory term from the gaming community for a newcomer.

“Some 400 years after the death of the Bard, the words and phrases were coined far from Stratford-Upon-Avon, emerging instead from Silicon Valley, India, China, and Poland, as well as Australia, Canada, the U.S. and the UK,” said Texas-based Payack.

In the next chapter, Bella plans cliff diving out of loneliness. The other reason was also to listen the perfect voice of Edward - she listened during the times she plns to be near danger. She feels sweet when she hears his sound and jumps off the cliff. Well, I nearly thought she is going to die and Edward is going to find her in the middle of nowhere and change her into one of her kind and mean time other adventures will follow in the next sequels. But nothing like that happened, of course. Jacob finds when she thinks she’s dead and is in heaven. Jacob feels good to see Bella alive. He tells her that Victoria had changed her track and had headed for the beach, so e thought to check on her since she spends most of her time over there.

While dropping Bella back home, he smells something and hurries to leave. On questioned he tells Bella that he can smell a vampire near and the werewolves must be on the job. Even something like Jacob exploding into a wolf in the car and leaving some scars on her face. But none of this happened, of course, but I kept holding myself and continued reading.

Out of nowhere, Bella sees Carlisle’s car and asks Jacob to stop - explaining everything. Jacob asks if she was that wasn’t a trick. Jacob gets real furious then and drops her home. Charlie, at home, tells her the story of Emily being attacked by a bear leaving those scars. Only after talking to Jacob she finds out the true story - Sam exploding to wolf in anger when very near to Emily.
And yeah, the middle of the story somewhere also tells that Jacob is surprised to know that vampires’ sixth or sense is out myth and is reality.
